Founded in 1939, George’s Paint & Hardware has always been more than just a store; it has served as a cornerstone of the community, helping neighbors with everything from sharpening lawn mower blades to providing essential supplies for hurricane preparedness. Originally opened by George S. Dickinson in West Palm Beach, FL, the store quickly became known for its personalized service and expert advice, catering to both DIY enthusiasts and professional contractors alike.
In 1981, Christopher Spring took over ownership, continuing the legacy of neighborly care. Chris had worked at George’s since 1977, learning the trade under then-owner Frank Phillips and building lifelong relationships with both customers and colleagues. After purchasing the West Palm Beach store in 1981, Chris worked tirelessly to maintain its reputation for hands-on service and quality products, while fostering a true family-driven atmosphere.
Chris’s dedication to customer care and expert knowledge became the backbone of George’s success, and in 2019, he decided to expand beyond Florida. The first new location opened in Hayesville, NC, breathing new life into a long-vacant grocery store nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, as George’s Paint & Hardware became a trusted name in a new community.
In early 2022, George’s expanded once again, crossing state lines into Blairsville, GA. Despite these new locations, the core values of exceptional service and community care have remained unchanged. Both stores continue to reflect the same neighborly spirit that has defined George’s Paint & Hardware for decades.
For Chris Spring, however, the business is more than just a store—it’s a family legacy. His son Johnny has become an integral part of the business, continuing the family-owned and operated tradition that has long been a hallmark of George’s. Together, Chris and Johnny are ensuring that the values of family, community, and service remain central to everything they do.
Today, George’s Paint & Hardware is thriving in North Carolina and Georgia, with Chris and Johnny leading the way. They continue to provide personalized service and expert advice, just as the store’s founders did back in 1939. As the business grows, George’s Paint & Hardware remains committed to its roots: a place where customers are treated like neighbors, and quality service is always a priority.
